I’m Roy G. Miller, The PRactical PR Guy.
I’m a part of the PR team at The Point Group, a Dallas PR and marketing communications company. I’m a 25-year communications veteran who believes that communicating to the marketplace—to key audiences such as employees, customers, prospects and the media—shouldn’t be painful, problematic or expensive. Communications is strategic, persistent and always practical.
My career spans from serving publicly held companies and international firms to small- and mid-sized organizations. I’ve served on both sides of the communications business—as an agency executive and client. I understand that communications—especially the functions of public relations and social media—are foreign and overwhelming to time-constrained executives and business owners. That’s why education, clarity, client communications and trusted support are paramount.
What makes me different? That’s a loaded question, but my forte is strong writing skills, a journalistic nose for news and a business sense of “the bigger picture”–the business realities and results of communications. Everything must align with business goals to mean anything. I also believe that our job as communicators is to demonstrate integrity and transparency. This formula, with the additions of strategy, Big Ideas, a “politely persistent” media-relations and consistent market outreach gives clients what they really need: practical PR and business communications that works in the real world. I’ve worked with companies such as Affiliated Computer Systems/Xerox, AutoTester, Avalara, Aztec Systems, Dr Pepper, Family Hospice, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc., iTKO, KSS Retail, Lingualcare, Maple Lake Ltd., MobileDemand, Paragon Innovations, Resulte, Safety-Kleen, Techway Services and The Wilkinson Center, among others. I’ve worked with editors and reporters, locally and nationally, ranging from CNET, CNN and Computerworld to Business Week, The Dallas Morning News, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker and People Magazine. I was privileged in 2006 to be elected as president of the International Association of Business Communicators/Dallas. It was an honor to lead the organization and work with some of the finest communicators in the industry.
I’m a native Texan, grew up in Plano, Texas, graduated from Plano Senior High School, and then the University of North Texas. I received a bachelor’s degree in journalism, with double minors in marketing and political science.
When I’m not working, I’m completely enamored with my children, all three of them (even though two are teenagers) our dachshunds, Scarlett and Ashley, and one feisty feline, Leo the Mighty, which is the real head of the household.
